Leak Detection and the meaning of the phrase

Pipeline leak detection includes hydrostatic test after pipeline erection and leak detection during service. Pipe leak detection is something that has to be dealt with a lot of severity as a leaking pipe can cause great loss to a home or a business.

Pipeline networks are the most economical and safest mode for transporting mineral oil, gases and other fluid products. As the safest and trusted means of long-distance transport, pipelines have to fulfill high demands of safety, reliability and efficiency. Most pipelines, regardless of what they transport, are designed with a typical life span of twenty five years. When the pipes begin to fail, they become so slow beginning with leaks at poor construction joints, corrosion points and small structural material cracks, and gradually progress to a catastrophic ending. But there are also other reasons for leak disasters such as accidents, terror, sabotage, or theft.

A system has been developed that is meant to specifically deal with leak detection. The leak detection system has the sole duty of identifying where pipes have leaked and sending a signal of the same to the relevant company or home.

The primary purpose of leak detection systems (LDS Systems) is to assist pipeline controllers in detecting and localizing leaks. Leak detection systems provide an alarm and display other related data to the pipeline controllers in order to aid in decision making with regards to the leakage. Pipeline leak detection systems are also beneficial because they can enhance productivity and system reliability thanks to reduced downtime and reduced inspection time. Leak detection systems are therefore an important aspect of pipeline technology and the world of leak detection.

According to the API document “RP 1130”, Leak detection Systems are divided into internally based Leak detection Systems and externally based Leak detection Systems. Internally based systems utilize field instrumentation such as; flow, pressure or fluid temperature sensors, to monitor internal pipeline parameters. Externally based systems also utilize field instrumentation such as; infrared radiometers or thermal cameras, vapor sensors, acoustic microphones or fiber-optic cables, to monitor external pipeline parameters.

Pipe leakages a part from causing adverse loss to a business often bring doubt in the minds of the consumers of the product, as such; this technology that detects pipe leakages is viewed as a big step both in the industrial sectors and in the domestic sector. Leaks are also a sign of worn out pipes, subsequently, leak detection is just a way of telling you that your pipe needs replacement.
